It seems that people, even those who haven’t been directly impacted by COVID-19 disease, are struggling to cope with the admittedly high stress levels of 2020. When it comes to dental practice owners, the “indirect” impacts are having their businesses shut down, having to furlough or reduce staff, bleeding money while waiting for assistance, incomplete and/or contradictory guidance for reopening, and many others.
The reported symptoms of these stress reactions include, but aren’t limited to:
More rigid thinking and behavior
More pessimistic view of the future
Difficulty falling asleep and/or staying asleep
Lack of interest in, or less enjoyment of, activities that used to be fun
That’s not an exhaustive list by any means. You may not feel as if you’ve been impacted negatively – and you may well not have been – but ask yourself:
When it comes to running your practice, are you following the same “playbook” that you used before COVID hit?
Do you find yourself becoming more irritated or even angry than usual when things don’t go right in your business?
Do you have more trouble making it through your work day and/or bringing the same passion to the work than in 2019?
Do you find yourself unusually resistant to considering alternative ways of doing things?
Do you find yourself speculating about selling your practice or about retiring far sooner than you originally intended?
Think Wake-Up Call, Not Diagnosis
This kind of stress reaction, we’re told, shouldn’t be confused with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Instead, these kinds of feelings and behaviors are best viewed as a normal reaction to an abnormal situation that can affect different people to different degrees. If you’re in doubt about your own status, consult a trained professional.
However, these aren’t the qualities that are going to serve the owner-dentist well going forward. Business owners need flexibility, perspective, optimism, and stability to make the right decisions and chart a path forward for their businesses.
Again, you might not be affected as strongly by what dentists across the country went through last year. But it’s fair to say that everyone has been affected to some degree. So, consider the possibility that continuing to follow the same playbook for growing your practice isn’t the best solution.
