Your state may have mandated that your practice work with a reduced schedule right now. If so, that’s a good news/bad news scenario; you’re making money, but not the money you used to. And if you don’t have the demand to bring all of your teams back, you run the risk of some of them not returning. 

If that happens, you’ll need to go back to the “well” of job applicants and spend your valuable time sorting through applications and resumes, interviewing, running background checks, and all of the tedious tasks associated with hiring.

There are probably a few dentists in the country that enjoy the hiring process, but they’re the rare exceptions. All too often, the hiring process is subjective and prone to error. Have you ever recruited and hired a promising candidate, only to have to let them go after a few weeks or months because they just weren’t doing the job.

That’s a waste of your time and money out of your pocket. You know what’s also a waste? Hiring a B- or C-player team member when what is you need is a solid A-player.

Why Not Recruit The Best?

A-players are the motivated, professional, reliable, and trustworthy team members who embrace your vision for the practice and enhance the impact it has on the community. 

A-players are self-motivated to constantly improve. In the process, they influence your other team members to become better.

If you can replace one or more B- or C-players with A-players, your dental practice will benefit mightily. A-players don’t do drama, and they can act as a stabilizing influence on the rest of your teams. Not only that, but A-players tend to be highly productive and help other team members to improve their performances.

“Sure,” you say, “that sounds great. But how do I find these A-players?”

Well, at the risk of sounding crude, you use the right “bait.” The traditional Help Wanted ad doesn’t cut it with A-players:

Busy, growing dental practice seeks highly motivated and results-oriented dental assistant. Salary commensurate with experience.

You need to wax poetic, so to speak, about the opportunities awaiting the right candidate. If you’re not good at waxing poetic, get help. You need to paint a picture of the kind of practice they’d be proud to be a part of. You need to emphasize your vision for the practice and the kind of impact you’re making, or hope to make, on the community through your efforts.

A-players are good, and they know they’re good. They’re so good, in fact, that while they demand fair compensation for their abilities, they’re looking for more. They want to be part of something greater than themselves, to know that their efforts will effect positive change. 

You can’t just throw money out there and expect a true A-player to respond. They can get money.
