How happy are you with what walks through your doors? If you’re like the vast majority of dentists these days, you’re overwhelmingly getting low-value, insurance-driven patients. Not to mention a lot of one and dones with no loyalty to your practice.

Here’s a challenge for you. Go to www.usa.com and look up your market area. Find the demographic information about your market, including the number of families and the number of households with annual incomes over $100,000. If you’re in an expensive area such as New York City, San Francisco, or Palm Beach, adjust that income figure upward accordingly.

Do some simple math, and you’ll almost certainly discover that at least 20 percent of the households in your market have the discretionary income to go fee-for-service for dental care. More likely, your number will be between 30 and 40 percent.

Can you imagine what it would be like if 30-40 percent of your patients didn’t much care about what dental insurance would cover?

That Door Swings Both Ways

Getting better patients is only part of the equation. Smart dentists will also focus on keeping as many existing patients as possible. It’s orders-of-magnitude more expensive to attract a new patient than to retain one you already have.

How are you patient retention efforts going? If you’re getting patients with no loyalty, probably not all that well. However, patients with the resources to be choosy about their dentist also tend to be amazingly loyal. The lifetime value of these “better” patients is far greater than what you’ll get with a constantly-churning patient base.
