It would be an understatement to say that we’ve been through extraordinary times in the last 16 months. But now that we can see our way clear to a future that’s at least less hindered by COVID-19, it’s time to look ahead.
What’s the current trajectory of your practice? Are you growing, shrinking, or plateauing in terms of patient base, average patient lifetime value, average case value?
Have you lost a major employer in your area, or have a number of smaller businesses closed their doors?
Do you have new competitors entering your market? Or, are you facing a strong challenge from one or more existing competitors? Are the PPOs and insurers continuing their relentless squeeze tactics? And if so, what will you do about that?
One thing seems certain – the post-COVID business environment will be different than the state of affairs that existed pre-COVID. The question is, how will you respond?
Time To Plan?
All over the country, dentist-owners are happy to be seeing patients again and making money. However, pent-up demand from the shutdowns seems to be pretty well exhausted, though, so you can’t bank on that to keep your chairs filled.
It’s time to take a step back and consider the prevailing trends in your market in light of your medium-term goals. Run your numbers, factor in current or projected market changes, and see what your projections now look like compared to your pre-pandemic projections.
If you don’t like what you’re seeing, it’s time to take action; course corrections are best done as early as possible, as the Titanic unfortunately proved.
