It’s good to take stock of your practice’s health to see if the strategies you have in place are helping or hurting your bottom line. We recently sent out a survey to dentists across the country to see what they were battling and what they were doing to combat their challenges.   

An overwhelming majority of respondents are struggling with staffing shortages. Competing with positions that allow professionals to work from home for the same salary, or more, has a lot of doctors in a bind. While nearly 50% of our respondents have retained the same number of staff, over half of that group had to give raises, provide bonuses, and offer more flexibility. Despite efforts to retain their team, 10% have still lost out to positions that could offer more hours, more money, or were enticing enough to pull them out of dentistry altogether.

Filling holes in the schedule with quality patients who can afford recommended treatments came in at a close second to staffing. Nearly 48% of surveyed dentists are starting to see holes in their schedules, and attracting patients who bring high value cases to the table seems difficult. Even if you feel you’re behind the eight ball when it comes to attracting better patients, you do have options. Building a solid base of better patients can start one case at a time. It won’t be an overnight success, but if you make an effort to improve one appointment at a time each week, month, or year, you’ll set yourself up for long-term success.
